ભારત સરકારે ૨૨ મી જુલાઇ ૧૯૮૮ના પગારધોરણ સુધારણા વિશેના જાહેરનામામાં સૂચવેલું કે અધ્યાપક સહાયક / વ્યાખ્યાતા તરીકે નિમણુંક પામવા ઉમેદવાર, નક્કી કરેલી જરૂરી શૈક્ષણિક લાયકાત ઉપરાંત ખાસ કરીને આ ઉદ્દેશ માટે આયોજિત સર્વગ્રાહી કસોટીમાં ઉત્તીર્ણ થયેલ હોવો જરૂરી છે અને એ જ ઉમેદવાર અધ્યાપક સહાયક / વ્યાખ્યાતા તરીકેની નિમણુંક માટે યોગ્ય ગણાશે. UGC એ અધ્યાપક સહાયક / વ્યાખ્યાતા બનવા માટેના પ્રથમ પગથિયા તરીકે રાજ્યોના શિક્ષણ સચિવો અને ઉચ્ચશિક્ષણના નિષ્ણાતો પાસેથી માર્ગદર્શન મેળવીને આ કસોટીનો આરંભ કરવાની ભલામણ કરી છે.
આ ઉદ્દેશથી UGC દ્વારા જુનિયર રિસર્ચ ફેલોશીપ (JRF) અને અધ્યાપક સહાયક / વ્યાખ્યાતા ની યોગ્યતા માટે ૨૪મી ડિસેમ્બર ૧૯૮૯ અને ૨૯મી એપ્રિલ ૧૯૯૦ ના રોજ વિવિધ ભાષાઓ સહિતની માનવવિદ્યાઓ અને સમાજવિજ્ઞાનોના વિષયની કસોટીનું આયોજન કર્યું છે. CSIR દ્વારા જુનિયર રિસર્ચ ફેલોશીપ (JRF) અને અધ્યાપક સહાયક / વ્યાખ્યાતા ની યોગ્યતા માટે ૩૧મી ડિસેમ્બર ૧૯૮૯ના રોજ જોઇન્ટ UGC – CSIR કસોટીનું આયોજન કરવામાં આવ્યું. આ કસોટીનું સમયાંતરે UGC દ્વારા રાજ્ય સરકારો અને કેન્દ્રશાસિત પ્રદેશો ને પૂછવામાં આવ્યું કે તેઓ સ્વતંત્રપણે અન્ય કોઇ કસોટી નું આયોજન કરશે કે UGC / CSIR ની કસોટીનો અમલ કરશે. જો તેઓ UGC અને CSIR સમકક્ષ પોતાની કસોટી લેવાનો વિકલ્પ સ્વીકારે તો એ કસોટીને UGC દ્વારા માન્યાતા મેળવેલ હોવી જોઇએ. ૨૫મી મે ૧૯૯૦ ના રોજ યોજયેલ મીટીંગમાં કમિશને રાજ્ય સરકારની સમિતિઓ અને કેન્દ્રશાસિત પ્રદેશો દ્વારા જેનું આયોજન થવાનું છે તે અધિકૃત કસોટીના આયોજન માટે UGC કમિટિની રચના કરવાનું નક્કી કર્યું. આ કમિટિને U-CAT નામ આપવામાં આવ્યું.

UGC અને UGC – CSIR દ્વારા આયોજિત કસોટી નેશનલ એલિજિબિલીટી ટેસ્ટ (NET) તરીકે ઓળખાય છે અને આ કસોટીને સમકક્ષ રાજ્ય સરકાર દ્વારા આયોજિત કસોટી સ્ટેટ એલિજિબિલીટી ટેસ્ટ (SET) તરીકે ઓળખવામાં આવી. SET ના આયોજન માટે સૈધ્ધાંતિક રીતે ગુજરાત સરકારના શિક્ષણ વિભાગે MIS-1092-NEW-10 તા. ૩૧.૮.૧૯૯૮ ના પત્રક્રમાંકથી જાહેરનામુ પ્રસિધ્ધ કર્યું.

GSET 2022 Application Form has been Released on 29th August 2022. The Gujarat State Eligibility Test (GSET) is the state-level qualification test coordinated through the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara to enlist the contender for Lectureship/Assistant Professor. GSET is directing the test in Twenty Three (23) subjects at Eleven (11) Examination Centers spread across the Gujarat State.
